The Challenge
Graphic design serves as a medium for conveying ideas and messages through visual elements. Skillfully crafted visuals possess the capacity to convey impactful narratives that transcend time. As a student, the discourse around mental health is prevalent. Nevertheless, mental health often escapes the attention of the older demographic due to its intangible nature.
Goals
I aim to enhance mental health awareness through my design expertise, harnessing the potential of Instagram and other social media platforms for education and awareness. My goal is to foster awareness and knowledge surrounding mental health. Additionally, I aspire to furnish individuals with readily accessible resources for those seeking further information and engagement.
Design Process

Background Research: Exploring Mental Health Disparities
To start off my research, I delved into the historical context and underlying factors contributing to the disproportionate acknowledgment of mental health issues in contrast to physical conditions. I wanted to raise awareness by including relevant statistics to shed light on the extent of the problem, as it affects more individuals than commonly perceived. I referenced the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) at https://www.nami.org for reliable data. Below, you'll find key insights I gleaned from my research:

Organzing Research: Crafting a Comprehensive Layout
Following my research and data collection, I proceeded to strategize and structure my layout. My aim was to encompass a diverse spectrum of mental health issues, ranging from prevalent to less recognized. I envisioned a layout comprising four rows, each consisting of three segments. The initial row would focus on coping strategies for mental health, while the subsequent three rows would delve into mental health disorders in ascending order of prevalence. Below is the compiled list of mental health disorders I chose to represent.

Visual Research: Setting the Atmosphere
In terms of visuals, my aim is to evoke a sense of tranquility through the Instagram posts. I curated images that exude a soothing ambiance. Employing gentle hues, I intend to symbolize a peaceful mental state. Despite the delicacy of the subject, I strive to foster openness and dialogue around it.

Sketches: Illustrating the Unseen
Upon finalizing the disorders I intended to portray, I embarked on sketching out strategies for their visualization. Mental health disorders pose a challenge due to their often invisible nature, making them difficult to discern. I made diligent efforts to ensure the illustrations effectively convey their essence. Additionally, I crafted a series of visuals that promote the importance of self-care. To ensure accuracy, I once again reference National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Type & Color Exploration: Enhancing and Polishing Visual Elements
Forming a vision for the illustrations, I proceeded to choose a suitable color palette and typeface. I prioritized legibility in the typeface, given that the posts were intended for Instagram. Recognizing Instagram's visual-centric nature, I aimed to maintain concise text. Delving into color selection, I experimented with pastel palettes to evoke a soothing ambiance.

Final Designs: Conveying Mental Health Through Art
In the final arrangement, I opted to position the character art at the center, complemented by an intriguing fact about each corresponding mental health condition. Additionally, I integrated a link to additional resources at the bottom of each post, which will also be featured in the bio section. My primary aim was to encapsulate the essence of each mental health challenge and I'm content with the outcome.

Takeaways
Undoubtedly, this project presented challenges, yet the process was incredibly rewarding. During my research, I gained profound insights into various disorders, comprehending their symptoms and treatment methodologies. I believe it's imperative to instill awareness about mental health across age groups. Just as physical health issues are acknowledged, mental well-being should also command equal attention. I aspire that this project will encourage individuals to familiarize themselves with mental health symptoms, enabling them to provide support and compassion to those in their circles.
